Our Awards

Each year, we are proud to highlight leading society members and industry principals for their notable contributions to IEEE Power & Energy Society and the power and energy industry through the following distinct honors and awards.

IEEE Fellows

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation annually.

IEEE Technical Field Awards

IEEE Technical Field Awards (TFAs) are bestowed for contributions or leadership in specific fields of interest of IEEE each year. IEEE TFAs are presented by the IEEE President or designee at an IEEE technical conference or symposium as recommended by the relevant selection committee. Nominations must be finalized by 15 January, and endorsement letters are due on 31 January annually.

IEEE PES Technical Council Awards

Recognizes a committee member annually who has consistently “gone the extra mile” in contributing to IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES). The recipients must be a member of PES.

Recognizes technical committee that has had an active, impactful year in promoting and advancing the technical influence and value of PES. This award is determined based on the review of each PES Technical Committee's annual report submission.

Recognizes a committee member (not necessarily office holders on the Committee letterhead) who has consistently "gone the extra mile" in contributing to PES.  The Nominee must be a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society.

This is intended to be a level above the Committee Distinguished Individual Service Awards.  (There is no equivalent PES level award.)

Each Technical Committee is allowed one nomination per year, per committee. Nomination deadline is January 31.

Depending on the circumstances and the nominations received, there may be more than one or no awards per year.

Recognizes the technical and PES leadership contributions of younger members of PES.  PES Young Professionals are PES members who will be 35 years of age or younger on July 31 of the year in which the award is given.  The Nominee must be a member of the IEEE Power & Energy Society.

Each Technical Committee is allowed one nomination per year, per committee.  Nomination deadline is January 31.

Depending on the circumstances and the nominations received, an award may not be presented in a given year.

IEEE PES Technical Committee Awards

Each IEEE PES Technical Committee has the opportunity each year to award the following Technical Committee – level awards for outstanding technical contributions to the society.

Requests for all awards listed here are to be submitted to Shanon Nason at the PES Executive Office, please allow 6 weeks for processing. Download Technical Committee Award request forms. Use all five or only the forms needed.

Each Technical Committee of the Technical Council is entitled and encouraged to present a Technical Committee Prize Paper Award to the author(s) of an outstanding technical paper. This award consists of a framed certificate with inscription for the authors. These committee level awards will be distributed to the Technical Committee Chair or Technical Committee Awards Chair, or other designated representative, for presentation at a Technical Committee meeting.

This selection process is done by the individual Technical Committee and is a separate and distinct one from the Society-level IEEE PES Prize Paper Award nominations. Most committees choose to submit the same paper for Society-level awards as they selected for their Technical Committee Level Award.

Each Technical Committee of the Technical Council is encouraged to present a Technical Committee Award to one Working Group in recognition for outstanding performance in the development of a Standard, Guide or Recommended Practice.  The document must have been published within the previous 3 years, and must be a new work or a significant revision of an existing document (consideration should be given to the significance and relevance of the work to the power and energy community). This award consists of a framed certificate to be presented to the Working Group Chair (and other officers, if any), and the Working Group members will receive a paper certificate. The committee level awards will be distributed to the Technical Committee Chair or Awards Chair, or other designated representative, for presentation at a Technical Committee meeting.
