The topic of Integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and smart grids in ships and ports was selected via a poll of the members of IEEE PES Marine Systems Coordinating Committee (MSCC) and introduced during the plenary session of MSCC meeting in late January 2021. Within this frame the following actions were taken:
- The topic was discussed with the Organizing Committee of the IEEE Electric Ship Technology Symposium (ESTS), which is a conference covering the scientific areas related to the MSCC. As the call of the conference had been launched, it was decided that the topic would be covered via papers and tutorials. Thus, two papers were submitted, approved, and presented in IEEE ESTS ‘21.
- Moreover, one tutorial was also approved and presented during IEEE ESTS ‘21
- Additionally, a webinar was proposed and approved by IEEE Smart Cities.
- Furthermore, during informal meetings within MSCC several issues related to the topic will be covered with the proposed amendment of IEEE 45.1 on ship energy system design (The PAR has been submitted and expected to be approved by IEEE-SA by late September 2021).
- This topic has been discussed in the forum of the IEEE European Public Policy Committee (EPPC) as well, especially during the proposed amendment of the “Electrification in Transportation” policy document approved on July 27th, 2021 meeting. Moreover, a first discussion has been made about preparing a policy document on smart ports.

- Within MSCC the WG preparing the amendment of IEEE 45.2 is active (convening every second Friday and having the amended document almost finalized). For more information, please reach out to IEEE PES Marine Systems Coordinating Committee (MSCC), Vice-Chair, Prof. John Prousalidis,
- A plenary meeting of MSCC is planned to take place in early October (depending on the approval of IEEE 45.1 PAR). Besides other members from associations, the industrial and the academic sector, members of the JWG28 preparing the IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005 standards will be invited to join and volunteer to 45.1 WG.
- IEEE plans to announce a series of tutorials that will take place (via WebEx) which will focus mainly (but not completely) on IEEE 45 topics. Stay tuned for more information from the IEEE Marine System Coordinating Committee (MSCC) in the future.

Papers in the Electric Ship Technology Symposium (ESTS) co-sponsored by PES
The following article was contributed by Heather Tomley of Port of Long Beach, California. The author examined the efforts of Port of Long Beach to reduce carbon emission through using electric ships, trucks, trains, cranes, etc to replace diesel fuel. In addition, Port of Long Beach also built a microgrid for resilience: “Schneider Electric will design, engineer, construct, and commission the microgrid. The project entails installing a 300-kW solar carport, an energy control center with microgrid controls, and a 330-kW stationary battery energy storage system.”
