Member-Driven Initiatives

The IEEE Power & Energy Society Governing Board has allocated funding for Member-Driven Initiatives. The funding is open to all PES members, Chapters and Committees. PES Members do not require Chapter approval but coordination is suggested. Allocation of funds will be competitive. MDI Cycle 2

  • Call for proposal open date: 1 August, 2024 (EDT)

MDI Cycle 2 is now open to all regions except Region 10. (Region 10 funds have already been exhausted from Cycle 1 proposals)

Note that access to the form MUST be requested through your IEEE email alias. Requests from other email addresses will not be guaranteed and will be denied. Along with the completed form, please upload all vendor quotes in the supporting documents. Your application for PES MDI Cycle 2 will not be considered without this information.

Funding Priorities
Applications will be evaluated for funding by the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will give preference to initiatives that contain some or all of the following components:
  • The fit of the initiative to the PES Mission
  • Number of PES members impacted
  • Benefits industry members
  • Focus on Students’ and/or Young Professionals’ engagement
  • Benefits female members and/or increases female membership in PES
  • PES membership recruitment and retention
  • Public outreach to promote the field of electric power and energy and the PES Mission
Terms, Restrictions and Conditions
  • There is no minimum award size. For rolling-basis initiatives, awards are up to US$ 500, and for quarterly-basis initiatives, US$ 2,000.
  • Once funds are exhausted, no additional awards will be made through this program within the same call.
  • The local Chapter will be informed about the application, and coordination with them is required during the initiative development.
  • Funding is transferred to the local IEEE Section/Chapter bank accounts. Applicants should coordinate and get approval from the appropriate unit treasurer.
  • Initiatives should not be longer than 2 months.
  • The initiative must be efficiently promoted on social media and webpage.
  • At least one action should be developed to promote PES benefits and the MDI grant.
  • A final report is required within 30 days of initiative completion.
  • A PES eNews article about the initiative must be submitted after its completion.
  • Any images and descriptions of the event will be considered for use in the PES newsletters, promotions, and publications.
  • Only initiatives proposed PES member(s), Chapters, or Committees will be considered.
  • One initiative per Chapter or Student Branch Chapter can be approved each year.
  • Funds must be successfully requested and spent in the current year. Requests for multi-year or continuous funding will not be considered.
  • Funds will not be distributed for travel to conferences, conference fees, research, tuition, or indirect costs.
  • Compensation for work is not allowed on the initiative.
  • Other restrictions may apply.
Project Examples
  • Seed funding for a workshop for practicing engineers.
  • Support for a chapter meeting featuring industry executives.
  • Industry workshop.
  • Development of an outreach program to get students at primary schools interested in the field of electric power and energy.
  • Funding for a design competition for appropriate lighting technologies.
  • Support for an event leading to the creation of a new chapter.
Selection Committee

The Selection Committee members will be selected from PES Membership, Chapters Representative and Region Representative.

Timeline

In order to receive funding in 2024, applications must be received by 31 October 2024.
