The SBLCS Technical Committee is within the IEEE Power & Energy Society engaging in standards development and advancement of technical matters related to energy systems behind the meter. Our approximately 200 members are industry leaders, practitioners, and academics with a common professional interest in electric power and energy systems. The Committee holds numerous events throughout the year, including sessions and meetings at conferences (e.g., IEEE T&D, PES General Meeting, and others), online and electronic activities, and meetings.Committee Scope
Advancing energy systems behind the meter and their interactions with the Grid Engaging in standards development Sharing industry practices and state-of-the-art research on smart buildings, loads, and customer systemsSubcommittees
Subcommittee Title: Architecture Subcommittee
Scope: The Architecture Subcommittee of the Smart Buildings, Loads, and Consumer Systems Committee is responsible for developing and maintaining plans, concepts, and structural views related to architectural issues associated with the integration and coordinated operation of distributed energy resources (DER – responsive distributed generation, storage, and loads) related to consumer energy services. This includes the following: Plans for conceptual structures and organizational principles for integrating DER with the electric power system Concepts and structures that provide insight into coordination frameworks between transmission, mid-voltage, distribution, and DER facility systems Conceptual models for discussion points of interconnection and information technology interactions. Interoperability principles and tools to measure the maturity of standards, guides, and conventions for the purpose if integrating DER with the electric power system, identify gaps, and helping to prioritize steps to advance interoperability.

Customer Systems & Smart Buildings Subcommittee
Scope: The Customer Systems & Smart Buildings Subcommittee focuses on the process of design, operation, and integration of smart buildings and other customer systems with up-and down-stream energy processes and applications such as building energy management; energy facilities management; fire, safety, and security systems in regards to energy systems; microgrids and smart grid. Standards-based interoperability between products and processes is at the center of all activities and is explored as the key enabler linking data with systems capabilities behind the meter.

Loads Subcommittee
Scope: The Loads Subcommittee explores the treatment of all matters in which the dominant factors are the application, design, deployment, and operation of customer loads, and the technology and standards to support the functions of these consumer interests, including processes and models that may expand and clarify the relationship between the grid and load related energy resources and services behind the meter.
