Piscataway, N.J. – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, announced today the formation of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Artificial Intelligence for Power Systems Coordinating Committee (AIPSCC)—a new coordinating committee created to accelerate collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the electric power industry.
The AIPSCC was formed in response to rapid advancements in AI, machine learning, and data-driven technologies across the energy sector. As utilities, researchers, operators, and policymakers increasingly rely on AI-enabled solutions to enhance system reliability, resilience, security, stability, efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability, the coordinating committee will serve as a central hub to coordinate technical activities across PES and engage with external partners.
“AIPSCC represents a critical step forward in unifying the power industry’s efforts around safe, trustworthy, effective, and forward-looking applications of artificial intelligence,” said Fran Li from The University of Tennessee, Chair of the AIPSCC. “PES has long been at the forefront of shaping the future of electric power systems, and this committee provides a collaborative home for researchers, practitioners, and innovators working to ensure AI contributes meaningfully to a reliable and sustainable grid.”
Under its scope, the AIPSCC will:
- Serve as the focal point within PES for identifying issues related to AI in power systems
- Coordinate non-standards technical activities across PES Technical Committees and with external organizations
- Facilitate the exchange of experiences and knowledge related to AI applications
- Identify needs for technical reports, white papers, and future standards
- Support PES efforts to advance power engineering education, promote industry contributions, and strengthen chapter activities
The committee will operate under the PES Technical Council and will also collaborate closely with the PES Vice President of Publications on technical publications relevant to AI in power and energy systems.
“AI is transforming every layer of the power system—from planning and forecasting to operations, protection, markets, and customer engagement,” Li added. “By bringing experts together through the AIPSCC, we can accelerate progress, improve interoperability, and ensure these AI technologies are developed ethically, responsibly, and with real-world needs in mind.”
PES invites industry professionals, researchers, students, and practitioners to get involved with the AIPSCC. Those interested in contributing to working groups, educational initiatives, or community-building efforts are encouraged to visit the AIPSCC webpage by sending an email to Li at
