Women in Power: To Power the Sustainable Development

Abstract: The purpose of this WIP panel session is to highlight women role in promoting the SDGs in UN, especially in the field of electricity and energy. The session presents four major topics through four panel sessions. A diverse set of speakers were invited, including IEEE PES leaders and the WIP region and chapter representatives, both female role models and male leaders who have given full support to women development. The speakers made valuable speeches and shared experiences and viewpoints in women development, which helps to improve the status of women and inspire women leadership.

Panel 1: Opening Address

Topic: Bright Prospects for WIP in IEEE PES Community

Sainab Taiwo Ninalowo
, Former WIP PES Chair, Engineer of ComEd, delivered a speech on “Creating Diverse and Meaningful Connections that Foster Human-Centered Development” and presented how becoming PES WIP member can benefit ones’ careers, socialize, and contributions to local and global issues.

Wayne Bishop Jr., Vice President of IEEE PES Meeting and Conferences, gave a speech on “WIP and PES Conferences” and brought an exciting announcement about the new pledge passed lately, i.e. “Adopt the WIE pledge -PES supports the inclusion of a diverse set of speakers which will lead to more creative, interesting and representative panels across the PES and pledges to end same-sex panels at all PES meetings, conferences and events, including the PES WIP events”. He also made a “call for action” to have more women in leadership roles in IEEE PES Conferences and to have more women speakers at all events.

Dr. Noel Schulz, IEEE Fellow, IEEE PES President (2012-2013), Professor of Washington State University, talked about “Resilience for Women in Power” and the opportunities and challenges. The networks and mentors function as resilience toolbox and how they are beneficial for women.

Montero Juan Carlos, IEEE PES Vice President of Membership and Image, system operater of Costa Rica Institure of Electricity, introduced the experiences operating with high renewable energy sources and the development of women members of Costa Rica.

Jessica Bian, IEEE PES President-Elect, Vice President, Grid-X Partners, gave a comprehensive introduction of the PES and the PES WIP, which provide good platform and strong support for preparing women to become future leaders.

Panel 2: Keynote Speech

Topic: Women leadership in Power & Energy Industry


Wanda Reder, IEEE Fellow, President & CEO of Grid-X Partners, made a speech on “Building Gender Diversity in the Power & Energy Industry”. She shared her viewpoint on the importance and advantage of gender diversity, and some commendations for women engineers and organizations.

Carla Frieh, Director of Engineering of ComEd, shared her career experience: when we collaborate together, we make it possible to do more and be better. This is what is necessary to make available the clean and affordable power that will lift up communities in need.

Khayakazi Dioka, Chair of Cigre WiE, shared her perspective on empowerment, motivation and inspiration to women engineers. Leadership requires clear purpose, agenda in the boardroom, and catalyst for change. Skills learned in career foundation can fuel one’s purpose, and mentor programs can motivate, encourage and inspire others.

Panel 3: Subject Speech 1

Topics: Promoting Women Engineers Around the world, for Green Future

Celia Shahna,WIP Region 10 Representative, Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, spoke on “Virtual conferences became the new trend of networking – My experiences in R10”. She introduced 2020 Flagship Event in R10, 2020 PES DAY International Webinars, which are all successfully conducted in the form of virtual conference, and inspired more women to attend.

Lisien Leon, WIP Region 9 Representative, Project Engineer of ENGIE PERU, shared success stories of WIP volunteers around Latin America and the Caribbean. To explore the hidden strength of women engineers benefits the society.

Ajay Kumar Machan, IEEE PES DAY chair, Vice Chair of WIP Memebership and Marketing, G.Pulla Reddy Engineering College, made a presentation on “Women is a driving force for the future of humanity – my experience in leading PES Day activities”. Ajay discussed the connection between PES DAY and the goals of PES WIP, and the role of PES WIP Leaders in PES DAY. He also demonstrated a detailed survey result to show the impact created by WIP volunteers.

Mercy Chelangat, IEEE Smart Village Ambassador, IEEE PES WIP Lead Region 8, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, made a presentation on “Promoting Women Engineers Aroung the World, for Green Future”. Mercy showed the promising trends in the Greener Energy World, and the upcoming challenges and barriers, and shared some policies and solutions. WIP in advocacy plays important role in promoting more diverse leadership, community education leadership and networking opportunities for learning.

Panel 4: Subject Speech 2

Topic: Removing Barriers to the Growth of Women Engineers


Staji Wilson, IEEE PES WIP Sub Region Representative India, Assistant Engineer of Tata Consultancy Services, talked about “Need of Survey on Members Requirement”, bringing attention on the importance and advantages of the membership survey. Some practical solutions s were provided, such as classification and segregation of information, key expectations and additional needs of members, etc.

Yasmine Chellye, IEEE PES WIP Northern Africa Representative (R8), National Engineering School of Sfax, talked on “Joining IEEE has promoted my life value – My membership experience as a student” and shared her valuable voluntary stories to the audience.
