March Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month is recognized annually throughout March, highlighting the achievements of women throughout history. Women’s History Month theme this year is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.” IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) would like to spotlight Maria Berio from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Maria has been appointed Member At Large, Women In Power of the 2025 IEEE PES Governing Board. The engineering industry is not new territory for Maria as her background comes from working within the environmental and infrastructure space for two decades, specifically working within the power and energy space for about 15 years. Being a transformational leader, Maria takes pride in surrounding herself with others who share her vision of innovation and growth.
Maria shared, “I was drawn to the field by the opportunity to solve complex problems and make a tangible impact on society.”
Maria decided to join IEEE Power & Energy Society “to connect with like-minded professionals who champion initiatives that empower women in the energy industry.”
She loves what IEEE PES represents for students and professionals who want to be part of the change and a community filled with career growth, networking opportunities, and mentorship experiences. Even when she was younger, Maria was passionate about making a difference and setting an example for those around her.
“We are at the most exciting times. IEEE PES is the place to be when you are in a world full of ongoing change”.
Maria went on to share that in this industry, you have to be open to change and stay connected with decision-makers. She explains that every innovation has opened so many doors, and she finds that rather inspiring. More importantly, Maria expressed the need for more women in this profession. She strives to be that voice of motivation and empowerment. She encourages women to embrace their growth and strength, have a seat at the table, and be part of those bigger conversations.
“I feel very honored to be on the IEEE PES Governing board, not only as a woman but also as a voice for others like me.”
When asked what IEEE PES means to her, Maria shared:
“A community where I can grow professionally while focusing on innovation and leadership in the power and energy industry.”
Maria explains that she truly enjoys connecting with others in IEEE PES. When given the opportunity to network at events or showcase unique work paired with bouncing around ideas and research, Maria finds that inspiring. She also adds that the way members use collective resources to clarify a rather complex problem shows the power of partnership and community within the organization.
Looking towards the future, Maria shares the goal she wishes to accomplish in her new leadership position: “I aim to lead and support initiatives that contribute to the career development and success of women in the power and energy industry”.
Maria expresses her appreciation for the amazing work that women are accomplishing in today’s society. She urges others to continue to have that drive, to take action, and to have a united voice.
Maria further explained that listening is the best leadership skill. Having an open ear and mind is a powerful tool.
She references the 3 Pillars Method she lives by that has been a staple in professional development:
“Learning, mentorship, and networking; of course, working in this industry, such things happen organically; however, following this method allows for more professional development and connection.”
Maria shared a few helpful tips that have helped her throughout her career, “Find yourself good mentors and take advantage of people through your community of network. Always look for continuous learning opportunities and room for improvement. We all need support and IEEE PES values that and provides a support system for its members”.
