IEEE PES Webinar: Understanding Oscillation Risks in Series-Compensated Systems for GFL and GFM IBRs

13 May @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Presented by: Dr. Ratik Mittal, Danovo Energy Solutions

This webinar:
Examines the dynamic behavior of IBRs connected radially to series-compensated transmission lines, considering both GFL and GFM configurations. Potential interaction mechanisms between series compensation and IBR controls are identified, supported by EMT simulations that highlight key stability concerns.
Nonlinear analytical models developed in the dq reference frame are validated against EMT results and used to analyze eigenvalues and participation factors, providing insight into dominant oscillatory modes and their influencing factors. The results show that series compensation can destabilize modes associated with inverter synchronization by increasing the sensitivity of voltage phase angle to the synchronizing angle and introducing phase lag in real power response. These effects can interact with the PLL in GFL-based IBRs and with power-based synchronization in GFM-based IBRs, potentially leading to oscillatory instability. The findings offer important insights for assessing and mitigating stability risks in IBR-dominated, series-compensated power systems.
