Emphasizes the practical value of combining both perspectives. White-box approaches offer interpretability and support model validation when structure is known, whereas black-box approaches enable faithful modeling when the resource is inaccessible from a modeling standpoint. Together, they form a flexible foundation for improving IBR representation and strengthening grid stability studies in diverse practical settings.

Presenter bio:
Dr. Yuzhang Lin (Senior Member, IEEE) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New York University. His areas of interest include smart grid modeling, monitoring, data analytics, cyber-physical resilience, and machine learning applications. His research has been supported by a wide range of government agencies the power industry. He is currently working with many utilities and grid operators on smart grid and AI technology R&D and demonstration. He is the Co-Chair of the IEEE PES Task Force on Standard Test Cases of Power System State Estimation, the Secretary of the IEEE PES Distribution System Operation & Planning Subcommittee, and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award.
