Abstract:
Power providers are facing two unprecedented challenges. One, huge increases in power demand driven by the increasing scale and speed of data center construction and two, greatly increased complexity of the system operation with the extensive integration of DERs. In the last decade, there have been many technological advances in the equipment used within the distribution system.
The one underlying theme of these advances has been the use of digital technologies, in both standalone devices and embedded into native digital primary equipment (NDPE), to speed up system installation and to reliably control the bidirectional flow of power. In this tutorial we will cover technologies that make digital substations possible. We will start at the extreme edge with the use of current and voltage sensors for measurement.
We will then cover how these measurements are digitized and then used in highly flexible and configurable protection and control schemes based on IEC61850. At the other end, we look into a native digital primary equipment with integrated current voltage M&D capability as a complete functional unit and its potential effects on MTTF and MTTR due to convergence in number of layers within a substation. While conventional architecture would still be based on distributed protection and control, we will then transition to the concept of centralized protection and control (CPC) and then CPC with NDPE, standardized hardware, configurable and made versatile by flexible software. In each case we will discuss how these technologies contribute to reducing interconnection times, lower implementation costs, and ensure reliability and resiliency.
